WHEN'S A PRESENTER TO PRACTICE? by Greta Muller

Probably the biggest challenge I hear from clients is finding the time to practice these great skills we work on.

Hey! That's easy, I say. EVERY INTERACTION IS A CHANCE TO PRACTICE.

Every conversation, every interaction . . . maybe it's the checkout clerk at Walmart- a chance to practice. You shouldn't wait for your big presentation to "practice" your communication skills. We communicate with dozens of people every day depending on our job, health, schedule, etc.

Just yesterday, after working and interacting with several people via phone, internet and in person, I shopped, went to a movie, ate out, and bought a lottery ticket. Sure, I could ignore that person taking my money by choosing to talk on my cellphone or text or be distracted by a laundry list of chores. But instead I chose to engage. I give most people my attention, react, initiate, and respond. I take that smile out for a stroll and then when I need it it is easy to find.

If working with someone who is naturally shy or quiet I propose the challenge to them that they choose one person away from work (Let's say the young lady at their favorite Starbucks.) and practice. This way prior to the BIG DAY- the presentation that may represent tons of money or perhaps a promotion, my client has the chance of extending themselves where it is SAFE.

Most people do not feel safe to make a mistake when their credibility is on the line, but at Starbucks? What the worst that can happen? You get a latte instead of a cappunccino?

So go for it! You've got nothing to lose and so much confidence to gain.
